A little pup creates a scavenger hunt for herself as she scours the garden for acorns. Finally chastised by a very angry squirrel, the pup and squirrel go around replacing the acorns back where the squirrel had hidden them. What sounds like a slight story is actually a fall-themed search and find opportunity, with counting elements included. With squirrel and acorn quite visible to readers, it’s only a question of why the dog doesn’t see the squirrel earlier. Bright bold colors and minimalist scenery keep the focus squarely on the characters, although I would have appreciated a few more details to ground the hiding spots. Maybe a map of the farm by the last page turn could have done this, similar to what Margaret Wise Brown did in her Barn story. Some of the posing for the dog and squirrel are quite adorable, although there are some in the last few pages where the proportions seem slightly questionable. It doesn’t detract from the enjoyable nature of the story or the appropriateness for the season.
